NEC to open Technology Innovation Centre

26 March 2013 - NEC New Zealand Ltd, a leading provider of communication networks and information technology solutions, announced today that New Zealand’s Prime Minister, the Right Honourable John Key, will open its Technology Innovation Centre in Wellington on 27 March.

The new centre represents a multi-million dollar investment in New Zealand by NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) and marks 50 years of business in the country. The event will be attended by New Zealand’s leading technology and science companies, NEC’s business partners, Government departments as well as senior executives from NEC Corporation. The Wellington Centre will showcase many of NEC’s leading edge technologies and be the base for research, development and technical support for NEC New Zealand. The 1640m2 Centre includes a complete software development lab with a full scale, working NEAX 61E telephone exchange that forms the backbone of telecommunications in New Zealand. With 20,500 m of cable and 22 digital screens, the centre boasts biometric security systems, large scale commercial visual displays, machine to machine services and robotic technologies. The latest local research and development projects between NEC and partners from Canterbury University, Auckland University and Wellington Polytechnic are also featured.

NEC New Zealand Director and General Manager, Mr Leonard Dench says, “NEC has been successfully connecting New Zealanders for 50 years, supplying much of the country’s core technology from sorting all of New Zealand Post’s mail, processing all the telephone calls on Telecom’s landline network to even handling all the fingerprints for NZ Police. It is now time to look ahead to the next 50 years and showcase some of the impressive technology that we are developing and bringing to New Zealand. In the end it is about empowering New Zealanders through innovation.”

NEC’s success in New Zealand is based on bringing together the ingenuity and experience of its New Zealand team with the latest NEC global technology. NEC Corporation is keen to see this unique combination of globally linked innovation continue into the next 50 years, with the resulting technologies offered to the New Zealand market and distributed throughout NEC’s worldwide network.
